Dial-up Access or Dial-Up
A type of network connection that dates back to the 90s. Dial-up access is still used in places where there is a regular phone line and broadband Internet cannot be connected for certain reasons. All you need is a modem to connect.
The speed of such a connection is very slow for today’s users: no more than 60 Kbit/sec on average. The second major disadvantage – when the phone line is busy it is not possible to use the Internet: you can either talk on the phone, or sit on the Internet.
ADSL or asymmetric digital subscriber line
This type also uses a telephone line, but there are important differences: you can simultaneously use the phone and go online, and the speed is much higher – up to 24 Mbit/s. In this case, the load on the line is distributed asymmetrically – the incoming connection is faster than the outgoing one. This badly affects the data download speed.
To connect you will need a telephone line, a modem and a splitter.
This is a transition point between the dial-up Internet and the FTTb connection. We will come back to it later.
Another type of Internet connection is VDSL, or very high speed digital subscriber line. This type of Internet uses twisted-pair copper at high frequencies to provide high-speed Internet.
DOCSIS .
This type of connection provides Internet over a television (coaxial) cable. This type of connection is known only to residents of dormitory and remote areas of St. Petersburg, Moscow and Yekaterinburg, where there is no possibility to bring additional wires into the house or none of the Internet service providers in the house.
To connect you need a cable modem: one outlet for the wire to a PC to distribute the Internet, the other to the TV. Watching TV shows does not affect the Internet. The speed with DOCSIS does not exceed up to 42 Mbit/sec.
GPON
The most modern type of wired Internet connection, but it is only available in major cities of the Russian Federation.
GPON connection uses a special fiber optic, which is installed in the user’s apartment. The signal speed is up to 2.5 Gbit/s and the ping is very low – just what you need for a great online game or streaming.
To connect you need a special optical modem – ONT. This device is usually provided by your ISP. This modem is already equipped with a module, so there are no extra wires in the apartment.
FTTb
This is an option for those users who are not yet available technology GPON.
As an alternative, providers provide access to the network of a personal fiber-optic line. With this type of connection, the cable is only laid up to the house and each apartment is connected via twisted pair. This type has an excellent price/quality ratio. The user can connect a package of services (Internet, TV and telephony), and the access speed can reach up to 800 Mbit/s.
